The world’s largest technology award, the ?1 million Millennium Technology Prize, is awarded every second year in recognition of outstanding technological achievements that directly promote sustainable societal development, quality of life and economic development.

The Prize is awarded to an individual or a research team for a specific innovation, based on scientific research, in any of following disciplines:

Energy and the Environment
Communications and Information
New Materials and Processes
Health Care and Life Sciences

The Prize purports to stimulate further achievements by the Award Winner(s) and other visionaries. It is hence normally awarded for specific innovations made during the preceding ten years, and not for cumulative accomplishments over a lifetime career or achievements already rewarded in international forums.

The Prize may be shared by a maximum of three individuals who were not members of the same team, if the Award Selection Committee judges that they have each made a critical scientific or technological contribution of essentially equal merit to the success of the innovation. The Award Selection Committee comprises a prestigious, international panel.

The first Prize Winner will be announced in mid April, 2004. The Award Ceremony takes place at the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki on June 15, 2004.

The achievement shall be directed specifically to the advancement of society and the goal of sustainable development. Eligible innovations have also already been found economically viable and successful in the market place. Technologies at the prototype stage are not eligible for the award.

A nomination must consist of

- a nomination form, accessible here (link below)
- a summary of accomplishments
- the candidate’s curriculum vitae
- three supporting letters

Where the nomination is made for a research team, a nomination form, a summary of accomplishments and a CV must be submitted for each member of the team.

Although not required, a bibliography may also be submitted for each candidate. Nominations without supporting letters will not be considered.

Nominations must reach the Finnish Technology Award Foundation by December 31, 2003.
