Electrical machine research activity at Nottingham University
High-speed electrical machines is one the themes dominating electrical drive research, partly due to the current improvements in the enabling technologies, and partly due to the significant impact the development of these machines will make in many application areas. This presentation will first discuss the operational limits of various electrical machine types and their mapping to various industrial applications. Recent developments in enabling technologies, such as electrical steels, copper alloys, manufacturing techniques and material characterisation are then discussed in an effort to quantify the additional technical capability entitlement. Finally taking real transport electrification multi-domain case studies, specific suitability aspects of high-speed machine topologies are highlighted.
David Gerada obtained his Ph.D. degree in high-speed electrical machines from the University of Nottingham in 2012. From 2007-2015 he was with the R&D Department at Cummins Inc. where he held roles including that of Senior Electrical Machine Design Engineer and Technology Innovation Leader. In 2016 he joined the University of Nottingham as a Senior Fellow in Electrical Machines.
His interests include pushing the operational boundaries of electrical machines for future automotive and aerospace transportation through multi-domain based research.
Dr. Gerada is a Chartered Engineer in the U.K. and a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
